Enjoy a Summer Vacation in Sicily and tour
the Mediterranean Island. |
|
Here is an overview of the Island. I will recount my own experience and first visit to Sicily. We started by car by taking a ferry from San Giovanni on the main land to Messina. Take the SuperStrade highway from Messina toward Palermo on the west coast.
Along the north coast, the blue water is almost a beautiful distraction as you try to drive from Messina to Palermo. One can not help to think, that our families that immigrated, looked out to this vast beautiful sea and dreamed about a new life in America, and also looked back at their roots and families. One should visit Cefalu, a tourist town on the north coast, where people love to walk the streets and be seen after work. Then venture to Palermo, and take a taxi which is like an amusement ride and auto race in one, then you will understand the passion and craziness of Italian drivers. Along the west coast, you feel more relaxed to visit Erice, Trapani and Marsala. Visit the tonnara to understand the history and influence of this region. On the south side of the island, visit Sciaccia, a city known for its ceramica art and carnivale. Then Agrigento, the Greek seaside city. Well that leaves the interior of Sicily, and very different country of rolling hills and rich countryside. This is where you see many natural beauties. Set out on a road course from west to east Visit Caltagirone, a busy city and great for shopping. Then Enna, with its historic heritage. The east coast from Taormina to Messina is highly developed like a beach resort, almost similiar to Miami Beach. |
