VALLEY OF THE BELICE (VALLE DEL BELICE)

Contessa Entellina is the part of the territory of the province of Palermo that extends to the Valley of the Belice.

Presently, there is a study of the Belice Valley. The Belice Valley: early cultural development in the Mediterranean area", and its ultimate goal is to collect and analyze the archaeological landscape on the basis of the socio-economic activities in archaic societies. There are many photos of this Monte Polizzo project near the Comune di Salemi.

There is evidence that olives were cultivated in the Belice valley when Greece had colonies in eastern Sicily. In the last two hundred years, following the discovery of the twofold nature of the Nocellara del Belice cultivar, there has been a specialization of production, with olives being grown for oil or for the table and being treated, as the case may be, before or after they have reached full ripeness.

The soil and climate and general environment of the Belice Valley, which has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers, some years being sub-arid or hot and arid, serve to influence the characteristics of the Nocellara del Belice, heightening the suitability of the cultivar for the production of table olives in the western Sicilian areas referred to.
